Selanjutnya pendidikan lanjutan atas diselesaikan di SMA 3 Bandung pada tahun 1951. Masa kecil hingga SMP kelas 3 dijalani di kota Garut dan pada 1949 beliau pindah ke kota Bandung untuk menyelesaikan sekolah lanjutan pertamanya di SMP II Bandung. Iwang Soewangsih dilahirkan pada tanggal 1 Januari 1931 di Serut, sekitar 6 km dari kota Garut, merupakan anak kedua dari enam bersaudara dari pasangan Bapak Djuharja Karjadimadja dan Ibu Marsiti.
